Makayla Stanislas, Registered Mental Health Counseling Intern
Makayla (she/they) is a provisionally licensed mental health therapist, practicing under the supervision of a Licensed Mental Health Counselor to ensure appropriate and thorough care. She works with adults experiencing acute or prolonged trauma, depression, and anxiety. Her approach is holistic; rooted in person-centered psychotherapy, ensuring the integration of multiple spheres of wellness, and tying in somatic treatment.
As an EMDRIA-Approved EMDR therapist, Makayla is equipped to deliver Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing treatment to clients who would benefit from integrating the body into their therapeutic work. Psychotherapy theories used by Makayla include Humanistic, Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy, and Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy. Their counseling education was completed at Wake Forest University (M.A. Clinical Mental Health Counseling), and they have clinical experience working with children, adults, and groups in a community mental health care center and at an intensive outpatient program.
Makayla is a queer Caribbean woman who has spent her life spread across three countries. They come to the field of therapy following an enriching career using her International Relations degree (University of Leicester), while integrating the systemic influences of gender across society formalised at University of Warwick (M.A. Gender and International Development). Now, she spends her free time indulging in literature, gardening, and pretending to be skilled at the electric bass guitar.
